In some parts of the world like Northern Scandinavia it is just too cold to enjoy the beach. In some parts of the world like Croatia there is no sand on the beaches. In some parts of Australia and America the waves and violent sea is just too daunting for some people. However, it is easy to forget that there are many countries, such as Hungary, that don’t have any contact with the ocean. Many citizens of these countries rarely get to experience the sea at all. For Hungarians the most accessible large body of water is Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe. Balaton is a whopping 77 kilometres long and between 4 and 14 kilometres wide.

The name Balaton is derived from a Slavic word meaning muddy lake. Despite this name, the water is quite nice and certainly attracts huge crowds in the summer months. The shores of the lake are dotted with cities and towns of all types and sizes, accommodating for a wide range of tourists and locals alike. From my experience the atmosphere around inland bodies of water with solid shores of rock and soil are extremely different to the sandy beaches I am used to.
