The Largest Market Square in Europe
June 28, 2009 | Francis Nicholls-Wunder
My first stop in Poland was the famous and very touristy city of Krakow. The large number of tourists is certainly justified with a very pretty inner city and of course Krakow’s close proximity to the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp museum. Smack bang in the centre of Krakow is the biggest market square in Europe.
Although it is no longer completely crammed with stalls (only a few florists and the like remain) the open space and surrounding architecture certainly make it a great place to waste the day away.
Unfortunately I had a spell of bad weather in my first few days in Poland but when the sun finally came out, I just couldn’t say no when a couple of Swedish guys were looking for a chat and a beer in the center. In my opinion, in the summertime at least, Krakow is worth a visit for the main square alone.
