Would you like to get 10% off a pint in Dublin, or discounted admission to the Louvre? Then keep reading.

The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is an international ID card for students. It is the only student ID card that is accepted pretty much around the world and it’s a really good thing to have. In addition to being a proper identification card while you’re studying abroad, the ISIC comes with a nearly endless list of potential discounts just for showing it. Cheap rail tickets, discounted airfare, meals and vendors, travel insurance and medical services – we could be here all day listing them all.

The best part about the ISIC is that it is a very easy thing to get, and it is available to all full-time students, as well as to teachers or non-students who are 26 and under. Basically, it pays to be young!

Where do I get it?: There are a couple ways to obtain an International Student ID Card. The ISIC is put out by STA Travel-approved agencies around the world. Oftentimes, these agencies will market at universities, setting up stands in student union buildings or passing out flyers during promotional days. Otherwise, designated travel agencies in your city can help you apply for an ISIC. The easiest way is to simply order one online, which can be done through STA’s website.

What do I need?: There are three different types of International Student Identity Cards: the Teacher Card (for teachers and faculty), the Student Card (for full time students) and the Youth Card (for anyone 26 and under). For each of these, you will need to show proof of your status. The best way is with a copy of either your local college/university ID card (it needs to have a picture and a date to prove your current status), or a copy of your enrollment, report card or transcripts showing that you are a current full time student somewhere. Teachers will need either a dated ID card or a letter on school letterhead proving their employment. To apply for the Youth Card, you just need some type of photo ID (like a driver’s license or passport) showing your age.

When you apply, you’ll also need to provide one passport-sized photo to go on the card. If you’re buying the ISIC online, you will be asked to send or email the photos and proof of ID.

How much does it cost?: Prices differ depending on the country, but for Americans, the International Student Identity Card costs $22 per year.

What are the benefits?: Endless! Seriously. You can pretty much show that card anywhere and get some money off. If you’re buying tickets for something, eating out or making travel itineraries – the list goes on and on. A full list of discounts (searchable by location) is available here. Furthermore, you can get loads of online discounts by entering your ISIC number when you purchase.

I have found the International Student Identity Card extremely useful in my travels. It got me half price tickets on the Irish Rail system and cheap tapas in Barcelona, among many other deals.
