The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore – The deserved centerpiece of Florence

Some famous European sights are hidden. Some are up a hill. Some are far from the city centre. Some are not near a city at all. Some are inconspicuous and some are underwhelming. The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is none of these things.
Smack bang in the middle of the city this duomo of Florence has been wowing visitors and locals alike since its completion in 1436. It is impossible to miss the three buildings that make up the complex and are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site that extends across the historic city centre of Florence.
It costs you a few Euros to get inside and to climb the tower, which does offer a nice panoramic view of the city, but there are a few other great spots from which to view Florence (see my article tomorrow!). However, the best part of the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is to stroll around outside and watch the tiled roofs and detailed architecture contrast with the blue sky.
The Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore is one of the many great reasons to visit Florence. With a great central location in Italy, it is on route for many Italian trips and a perfect base from which to reach great day trip destinations such as Pisa. Finally, thanks to the UNESCO listing, the entire central district of Florence is incredibly beautiful and rich with history and art. I implore, I demand that you spend a few days in Florence if you get the chance. A trip to Italy just isn’t the same without it.
