The city of Florence

Looking for that perfect postcard style photo of Florence but don’t want to pay for it? Well the Piazzale Michelangelo is for you! After a stroll across the river and a bit of a climb (or of course a tour bus or something of the like for you luxury travelers) you can get a fantastic panoramic view of the beautiful city of Florence and it won’t cost you a cent!

Located in the Oltarno district of Florence, the Piazzale Michelangelo was built in 1869 by architect Giuseppe Poggion, just south of the historical city centre. Ever since tourists and locals alike have flocked up the stairs to see the beauty of Florence on a sunny day or lit up in all its glory every night.

The Piazzale is named after the Renaissance artist, Michelangelo, who has several major works in the city. The statue of David (from the David and Goliath tale) seen in the square is a copy of the original statue that is also on show in the city of Florence…but you have to pay to see the real one…

To get some fresh air, a bit of exercise, and the best photos of Florence you can get without spending a dime, you should make your way up to Piazzale Michelangelo. Signposts will guide your way once you cross the river or you can just follow the stream of curious travelers that are after the same perfect sight.

Once again be aware that food and memorabilia stalls around this popular tourist spot often have prices higher than the average vendors in the city. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: If you are in a country with as great deli food as the likes of Spain and want to save money on buying food as you explore a city then bring yourself a picnic lunch, with a view like the one from Piazzale Michelangelo you won’t regret it.
