British Airways Cabin Crew Strike Cancelled
December 19, 2009 | Laura Carroll
The majority of crew workers favored the strike, but a court overruling has caused its cancellation.
Those who feared cancellation of their Christmas season flights via British Airways needn’t worry any longer. The cabin crew strike – intended to occur between Decemer 22 and January - has been overruled by the British court.
“(It is) a disgraceful day for democracy when a court can overrule such an overwhelming decision by employees taken in a secret ballot,” said Derek Simpson and Tony Woodly, General Secretaries of Unite – the union that enacted the strike after learning of the airline’s plan to cut crew levels and extend working hours.
The strike would likely have induced several cancellations throughout its duration and the dates surrounding, though Simpson told CNN that its intent was to force a negotiation with the airlines, not to cause inconveniences to its passengers.
Flights will now proceed as normal, though the strike is likely to occur in the near future.
