Arrive in Style: More Gifts for the Student Traveler

December 20, 2009 | Laura Carroll

getCustomSizeChristmas is rapidly approaching. I write this in a state of mild panic, considering how few of the items on my shopping list have been successfully crossed off. As per usual, I have a much easier time thinking about what I want, and the traveler in me seems to come up with endless essentials sure to make any trip abroad a little easier – or at least a little more fabulous.

Perhaps not all your recipients are about to head to some faraway destination but, if they are, here are a few more present potentials.

Digital camera: They’re relatively inexpensive these days, and are practically invaluable considering the amount of memories this gift will capture. I kick myself for not investing (or asking for) a small digi-cam to take out on the days or nights when I didn’t feel like hauling around my much bigger SLR.

Journal: A memory-filled journal is hands down the most precious travel keepsake. An easy to carry, aesthetically-pleasing journal is sure to inspire some written reflections.

Rain boots: If countries had a national shoe, England’s might be the Wellington. But you don’t have to be in Britain (or drop $100+) to have a stylish pair of rain boots that will keep your feet warm and your shoes pretty.

Luggage Tags: If the traveler in question carries – like 95% of the population – black luggage, luggage tags might be in order. They not only jazz up any old set, but keep one from waiting around at baggage claim trying to recall the shade and zipper structure of his or her roller.

E-books: The Kindle and its competitors make carrying and finding books a hassle free experience. Just make sure the recipient is into the whole screen-reading thing – I, for one, would terribly miss the feel of a paperback.

Gift Certificates: A gift certificate to an international store like Zara or H&M will alleviate the stress of having to pack the entirety of one’s wardrobe – a problem now more than ever considering the new, more restrictive baggage policies of several international airliners.

Rubber flip-flops: Two words: hostel shower.
